Understanding Drug Addiction

There are so many addictive drugs available- both legal and illegal- that it is difficult to keep track of them all. However, all addictive drugs have certain qualities in common. They all bind or attach to one or more brain proteins and t hey all alter the functioning of brain cell receptors or neurotransmitters, particularly dopamine, which is the primary neurotransmitter involved in the addictive process. All addictive drugs seem to hook into the dopamine pleasure pathway in some manner, resulting in a pleasurable “high,” and cravings for more of the drug.

Our Rehab Program

No single drug treatment program works for everyone. Each person has their own medical and psychological issues outside of their addiction (including other addictions), and all of these need to be taken into account before determining the best treatment strategy. Treatment strategies may differ, but our drug addiction services all start with a detailed, in-person interview with patients and family members to take these matters into account, and to help plan the best course of treatment.

Depending on the severity of the addiction and the patient’s individual circumstances, we offer inpatient care and intensive day programs on an outpatient basis. Most of our patients are best served by an in-patient course of treatment, but for out-patient care may be appropriate for those who are medically stable, and have an adequate, supportive living situation. Regardless of the program chosen, our certified drug addiction counselors and support staff will be on hand 24×7 to ensure your road to recovery is a smooth one. Call us today!
